Balayage vs. Highlights: What's the Difference?

Hair Guide · Scottsdale, Arizona
Quick answer: Highlights are lightened with foils, sectioned in a pattern from the root for even, brighter, more uniform blonde. Balayage is painted by hand onto the surface of the hair for a soft, sun-kissed result with a natural root and a softer grow-out. Many clients get a blend of both (often called "foilyage" or lived-in color).

Technique Woven or sliced sections in foil Hand-painted, usually without foil (or with a little foil for lift)
Look Brighter, more even, starts at the root Soft, blended, brighter toward the ends
Grow-out Visible line in about 6–10 weeks Soft — many go 3–4 months or more
Best for Maximum brightness, covering more of the hair, very blonde goals Low maintenance, natural look, brunettes going lighter

Partial, full and mini foils

  • Mini foil: a few foils around the part and face — a quick brightening between bigger appointments.
  • Partial highlight: the top and sides — what shows when your hair is down.
  • Full highlight: foils throughout the whole head, including underneath.

Babylights are very fine highlights for a subtle glow. Face-framing highlights (a "money piece") brighten the front. Lowlights add darker pieces back for depth — see the lowlights guide. Wet balayage is a quick refresh painted on damp hair for a softer effect.

Common questions

Is balayage cheaper than highlights?

Not always. A full balayage can take as long as a full foil. The real saving is fewer appointments, because balayage grows out softly.

Which is better for brunettes?

Balayage is a popular way for brunettes to go lighter with a soft, lived-in result. If you want to go very blonde, foils (or a mix) usually lift more evenly.

Do I need toner after highlights or balayage?

Almost always. Lightened hair has warm undertones, and a toner or gloss sets the final shade — icy, beige, golden or honey.
