Hair Extensions Guide: Methods, Upkeep & What to Expect

Hair Guide · Scottsdale, Arizona
Quick answer: Hair extensions add length, volume or both by attaching extra hair to your own. At The Hair Lounge in Old Town Scottsdale we install three methods: K-tip (keratin bond), hand-tied weft and tape-in weft. Most clients come back every 6–8 weeks for a move-up (wefts and tape-ins) or roughly every 3–4 months for K-tips. Every install starts with a consultation so your stylist can match color, choose the method and plan the amount of hair.

The three methods we offer

Method How it attaches Best for Typical maintenance
K-tip (keratin bond) Small strands bonded to tiny sections of your hair with keratin and heat Ponytails and updos, a very natural blend at the part and hairline Wear about 3–4 months, then removal and a new install
Hand-tied weft Thin, hand-sewn wefts attached to a row of small beads — no glue, no heat Lots of volume, clients who want to reuse their hair Move-up every 6–8 weeks; hair often lasts 6–12 months
Tape-in weft Flat panels that sandwich a thin slice of your hair with medical-grade adhesive tape A fast install and a flat, lightweight feel Move-up (re-tape) every 6–8 weeks; hair often lasts 6–12 months

Timelines are typical ranges, not promises — your hair's growth rate, how you care for it and the hair quality all change how long extensions last.

K-tip (keratin bond) extensions

K-tips — also called keratin bonds, keratin-tip or fusion extensions — are small strands of hair with a keratin tip at the top. Your stylist wraps the tip around a tiny section of your natural hair and uses a heated tool to fuse it. Because each bond is small and placed one at a time, K-tips move like your own hair and can be placed very close to the part and hairline. Installs take longer than wefts, and the bonds are removed with a bond-remover solution and a special tool — never pulled out.

Hand-tied weft extensions

A hand-tied weft is a very thin curtain of hair sewn by hand at the top. Your stylist creates a row of small silicone-lined beads in your hair and sews the weft onto that row. There's no heat and no glue, rows can be stacked for volume, and the same hair can usually be reused at each move-up. Hand-tied wefts are one of the most requested methods for full, lasting volume.

Tape-in weft extensions

Tape-ins are thin panels of hair with adhesive tape on one side. A thin slice of your natural hair is sandwiched between two panels. They're quick to install and lie very flat. At each move-up the panels are removed with a solvent, re-taped and placed back up near the scalp.

How to choose a method

  • Start with the result you want — length, volume or both — more than your hair type.
  • Maximum volume: hand-tied wefts — rows can be layered, and the hair is reusable.
  • You wear your hair up a lot: K-tips are the easiest to hide in high ponytails.
  • Lowest upkeep between visits: K-tips don't need move-ups; wefts and tape-ins need a visit every 6–8 weeks.
  • You're not sure: that's what the consultation is for. Bring photos of the look you want.

Extensions in the Arizona climate

Scottsdale's sun, hard water and pool season are tough on extension hair, because extension hair doesn't get natural oils from your scalp. Use a sulfate-free shampoo, keep conditioner off the bonds or tape, use heat protectant, and braid and rinse your hair before swimming. Common questions

Do hair extensions damage your hair?

Installed, maintained and removed correctly by a trained stylist, extensions shouldn't damage healthy hair. Problems usually come from skipping move-ups, removing them at home, or too much weight for the hair you have. Keeping your maintenance appointments is the biggest factor.

How long do extensions take to install?

It depends on the method and how much hair you're adding. Tape-ins are usually the fastest, hand-tied wefts take a few hours, and K-tips — placed one bond at a time — usually take the longest. Your stylist will give you a time estimate at your consultation.

Can I color my extensions?

Extension hair is color-matched at your consultation. Your stylist can tone or blend them in the salon; avoid coloring or lightening them at home.

Can I swim with extensions?

Yes, with care. Wet your hair with clean water and use a leave-in conditioner first, braid it, and rinse right after. Chlorine and salt dry out extension hair faster than your own hair.

Do I need a consultation first?

Yes. New extension clients start with a consultation so your stylist can match the color, recommend a method and order the right amount of hair. Book a consultation online or call or text us at 480-605-2148.
