How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?
Two different timelines
"How long do extensions last" can mean two things: how long one install stays in before it needs maintenance, and how long the extension hair itself lasts before it needs replacing.
| Method | One install | Life of the hair |
|---|---|---|
| K-tip | About 3–4 months | Typically one wear — new bonds each time |
| Hand-tied weft | 6–8 weeks, then move-up | Often 6–12 months |
| Tape-in | 6–8 weeks, then re-tape | Often 6–12 months |
What makes extensions last longer
- Keeping your move-up appointments on time
- Sulfate-free shampoo, and conditioner kept away from bonds and tape
- Heat protectant every time you use hot tools
- Sleeping with hair dry and in a loose braid, ideally on a silk pillowcase
- Brushing gently from the ends up with an extension-safe brush
- A shower filter or clarifying routine for Scottsdale's hard water
- Braiding and rinsing before and after the pool
Signs it's time for new hair
Ends that stay dry or tangled after conditioning, wefts that look thin, or color that won't tone back are signs the hair has reached the end of its life. Your stylist will tell you at your move-up.
Common questions
Do K-tip extensions last longer than tape-ins?
A K-tip install stays in longer (about 3–4 months vs. 6–8 weeks), but tape-in and hand-tied hair can be reused across several move-ups, so the hair itself often lasts longer overall.
Does the Arizona sun affect extensions?
Yes. UV and heat dry out and fade extension hair, especially blonde. Use a UV-protective leave-in and wear a hat on long days outside.
