What Is an Extension Move-Up?

Hair Guide · Scottsdale, Arizona
Quick answer: A move-up is the maintenance appointment for hand-tied weft and tape-in extensions. As your natural hair grows, the extensions grow down with it. Every 6–8 weeks your stylist removes the wefts or tape panels, refreshes them and re-installs them back up close to your scalp — usually reusing the same extension hair.

What happens at a move-up

  1. Removal: beads are opened (hand-tied) or tape is released with a solvent (tape-in).
  2. Clean-up: your natural hair is detangled and shed hair is brushed out — losing some hair from the root is normal, since it was held in by the extension.
  3. Refresh: wefts are cleaned; tape-ins get fresh tape.
  4. Re-install: the hair goes back up near the scalp, and your stylist adds hair if needed.
  5. Style: blend, cut if needed, and style.

Combining a move-up with color

Many clients book their move-up together with a toner, mini foil, partial or full highlight, or all-over color, so their roots and extensions stay matched. The Hair Lounge has combination appointments for this on our online booking — choose the one with your move-up and your color service.

How many rows?

If you wear more than one row of wefts, book the move-up that matches your number of rows so you get enough time. Not sure? Call or text us at 480-605-2148.

What about K-tips?

K-tips don't get moved up the same way. They're usually worn about 3–4 months and then removed, and a new set is installed.

At The Hair Lounge: move-ups for hand-tied wefts are done by Emma Nicole, Lauren Craig, Isabel Jimenez, Grace Sasso, Blythe Gilbert and Makinley Marks; tape-in move-ups by Emma Nicole, Lauren Craig and Isabel Jimenez.

Common questions

How often do I need a move-up?

Usually every 6–8 weeks for hand-tied and tape-in extensions. Waiting much longer lets the attachments slide down and can cause tangling or matting at the root.

Can I skip a move-up?

It isn't recommended. Overdue extensions can put more tension on your hair and tangle near the scalp, which makes removal harder.

Is the extension hair reused?

Usually, yes — that's one of the benefits of hand-tied and tape-in wefts. Hair is replaced when it gets dry or thin, often after 6–12 months.

How long does a move-up take?

It depends on how many rows or panels you wear and whether you add color. A single row on its own is the quickest; combination appointments take longer.
