Root Retouch & All-Over Color Guide
Root retouch vs. all-over color
- Root retouch: new growth only — faster, and it avoids layering color over the ends again and again.
- All-over color: root to ends — for a full change of shade or a refresh of faded ends.
- Root retouch with foils: a root touch-up plus a few foils for brightness.
Gray coverage
Gray hair can be coarser and resist color. Your stylist chooses the formula for full coverage or a softer blend. If you'd like to grow out gray, ask about blending with highlights or lowlights.
How often?
About every 4–6 weeks for full gray coverage; 6–8 weeks for many other clients. Your hair growth and color contrast decide.
At The Hair Lounge: root retouch and all-over color are offered by all of our color stylists — see Meet the Team to find your match.
Common questions
How long does a root retouch take?
Usually about 1½–2 hours including processing and styling.
Can I go lighter with all-over color?
All-over color can lift natural hair a little. To go noticeably lighter, especially over previous color, you'll usually need highlights or lightener.
